Grainger College of Engineering Professors Discuss COVID-19 Modeling
“If social distancing was never implemented, the results would be much, much worse than they are right now.”
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign professors Sergei Maslov and Nigel Goldenfeld predict that the number of deaths due to COVID-19 might have been 20 times higher in Illinois if a stay-at-home order was never implemented. Social distancing works. Staying at home saves lives.

Mitigating the Impact of COVID 19 on the Research Enterprise
On March 21, per the Governor’s order and in compliance with campus guidance from the Chancellor and Provost, all research activities on campus, in the field, and at auxiliary sites ramped down to conduct only essential activities. This means that most campus research labs, facilities, and field sites have ceased in-person operations—safely— with consideration during ramp-down of requirements to effectively ramp back up to resume activities when allowed.
Please refer to Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation’s guidance for questions about your research operations. Please see the campus COVID-19 website for additional information.

Research Computing Virtual Office Hours
Research IT has partnered with the Scholarly Commons to help researchers with questions about the campus’s high performance computing (HPC) resources. Research IT has a ‘Campus Champion’ available for virtual office hours starting Spring. Campus Champions act as facilitators helping campus members find the best HPC related resources for their projects. Their role is to help their institution’s researchers, educators, and scholars with their computing- and data-intensive research, scholarship, or creative activity. They can also give presentations that outline available HPC resources to interested campus groups or assist with training events.
If you have questions, you can contact the Scholarly Commons at sc@library.illinois.edu. If you’re ready to get started, fill out Campus Champion’s consultation request form at go.illinois.edu/campuschampion. Once you complete the form, someone will contact you with your office hour time slot and the Zoom link.
